Junior at Daytona's Pepsi 400
|
|
We were home, Daytona Beach, Florida. It's not Kannapolis but it's the
Mecca of stock car racing. The track where we have 21 victories. After the
Busch race the anticipation was high. We were sure Junior was ready. He was
starting towards the back. We think it was 36th. But the Earnhardt nation
knows, Earnhardts don't come to the track to qualify, they come to win.
The day started slowly Dale Junior made his way to the front. We saw him
as high as thirteenth. He may have been higher but we missed some of the
race during trips to the kitchen to get more hot wings and beer.

The cautions were few. The green flag stops were taking their toll on some
race teams. Then it happened. Dale stayed out and led a lap. This was it!
Tony Jr. was about to show us some Eury magic just like the old man did on
Friday night. Dale pitted and lost the lead but we knew they had a strategy.
Unfortunately they didn't have the horse power to work the plan. Even fresh
tires at the end didn't help. Was Dale big picture racing? We'd like to say
yes, but this was Daytona. Everyone wants to win here. February or July it
doesn't matter. So again the best driver with a great team didn't win. A
great driver with the best team did. Congratulations Tony.

We did however finish 13th. We moved up two spots in the points standings.
We now sit 3rd and poised for the Chase. Will our team be ready? Yes it will.
Tony Eury Jr. and Dale Earnhardt Junior respect each other, unlike last year.
They know what has to be done. Eury will find a few more horses like his
daddy would have. Dale Junior will drive like his daddy would have. The Earnhardt
Nation will have another championship. All will be well in the land of stock
cars. |
